Max Verstappen is a dominant force in Formula One racing, currently competing for Red Bull Racing. He holds Belgian and Dutch citizenship, but races under the Dutch flag.

His racing pedigree is undeniable. His father was a former Formula One driver, and his mother excelled in kart racing.

Following in their footsteps, Verstappen began karting at the young age of four and quickly rose through the ranks, amassing national and international karting titles.

His talent caught the eye of Formula One scouts, and he entered the feeder series in 2014. By the next year, at the remarkable age of just 17, he became the youngest driver ever to compete in Formula One.

Verstappen’s debut wasn’t just about breaking records; Verstappen impressed with his aggressive and skillful driving, earning him the nickname, Mad Max.

Victory followed soon after. In 2016, at the Spanish Grand Prix, Verstappen, at the age of 18, became the youngest driver ever to win a Formula One race.

This was just the beginning. Verstappen continued to rack up podium finishes and wins, establishing himself as a serious contender for the championship title.

Parents

Verstappen comes from a racing family. His father, Jos Verstappen, is a retired Formula One driver himself.

Jos competed for several teams in the 1990s and early 2000s, though he never quite achieved the championship success his son has.

Verstappen’s mother, Sophie Kumpen, was also a racer in her younger days, competing in go-karts. While she achieved some success, her career was cut short when she married Jos and decided to focus on raising their two children, Max and his younger sister Victoria.

Unfortunately, Verstappen’s parents divorced when he was young, and their relationship has been described as tumultuous.

He primarily lived with his father after the separation, and Jos is known for being a strict and demanding mentor.

Jos pushed Max heavily in the world of karting, believing such rigor was necessary to succeed in the competitive world of motorsport.

Karting career

Verstappen’s racing career began even before he could attend school. By the age of four, he was already behind the wheel of a go-kart, and just three years later, he was competing in championships.

His early talent shone brightly. In 2005, at the age of seven, he dominated the Belgian Limburg Mini Junior championship, winning every single race.

This incredible performance was repeated the following year, solidifying his reputation as a future star.

As Verstappen grew older, so did the level of competition. He continued to rack up wins in various categories, including the Rotax Max Mini Max class and the Belgian Cadet Championship.

By 2010, he had moved on to international karting with the CRG factory team, competing at the World and European championships. Here, too, Verstappen proved to be a force to be reckoned with. Victories in the WSK World Series and multiple podium finishes cemented his status as a rising star.

Verstappen’s most dominant year in karting came in 2013. At just 15 years old, he achieved an unprecedented feat. Competing in the top KZ1 category, he became the youngest driver ever to win the World KZ Championship.

This wasn’t his only triumph that season. Verstappen also conquered both the WSK Euro Series and Master Series in the KZ class, adding two more European titles to his collection.

This incredible triple crown – two European Championships and a World Championship – marked the pinnacle of his karting career and paved the way for his swift transition to single-seater racing.

Formula One career

Verstappen’s meteoric rise took him to Formula 1 at the incredibly young age of 17, making him the youngest driver ever to compete in the sport.

He started with Scuderia Toro Rosso, a feeder team for Red Bull Racing.

After impressing everyone with his talent and aggressive racing style, he was promoted to Red Bull mid-season in 2016. This move proved to be a turning point.

At just 18 years old, he defied expectations by winning the Spanish Grand Prix on his debut for Red Bull, becoming the youngest ever race winner in Formula 1 history.

Verstappen’s career continued on an upward trajectory. He challenged for race wins consistently and established himself as a serious contender. The 2021 season became his defining year.

Engaged in a thrilling and intense rivalry with Lewis Hamilton, Verstappen finally claimed the championship title on the very last lap of the very last race in a highly controversial finish.

This victory made him the first Dutch Formula 1 World Champion.

Verstappen’s dominance continued in 2022 and 2023, where he successfully defended his championship title both times.

With his aggressive overtaking maneuvers and exceptional car control, he has become a fan favorite and a force to be reckoned with on the track.

Currently, he holds several Formula 1 records, including the most wins in a single season and the highest win percentage in a season.

With his young age and immense talent, Max Verstappen is undoubtedly shaping the future of Formula 1.

Racing record

Verstappen has carved his name into Formula One history with a record-breaking racing career.

He holds the title of the youngest ever Grand Prix winner, achieving victory at the Spanish Grand Prix in 2016 at the tender age of 18.

This wasn’t just a one-off feat; Verstappen has gone on to dominate the sport in recent years.

One of the most impressive aspects of his record is his win rate.

In 2023, Verstappen shattered the record for most wins in a single season, securing a staggering 19 victories out of a possible 22 races.

This surpassed his own previous record of 15 wins in 2022, which itself broke the record held by legends like Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher.

Verstappen doesn’t just win races, he excels at them.

His dominance extends beyond wins. Verstappen holds the record for most points accumulated in a season, with a remarkable 575 points in 2023.

This dethroned his own record from 2022, showcasing his consistent performance throughout the season.

Verstappen’s talent is undeniable.

These records solidify his position as one of the greatest Formula One drivers of all time, and with his young age, there’s no doubt he’ll continue to rewrite the record books in the years to come.
