Two years into his tenure as President William Ruto deputy president, Rigathi Gachagua has been making strategic moves beyond the political sphere, marking his influence in Kenya’s corporate world.
Recent reports reveal that Gachagua and his family have acquired two iconic hotels, Olive Gardens Hotel and Vipingo Beach Resort, further solidifying their presence in the hospitality industry.
This acquisition follows earlier reports that Gachagua’s son, Keith, took over the ownership of the historic Outspan and Treetops Hotels, both steeped in Kenya’s colonial and post-colonial history.
Outspan Hotel: A Piece of Kenya’s Heritage
Outspan Hotel, nestled in the serene landscapes of Nyeri, is one of the crown jewels in the Gachagua family’s portfolio. Founded in the 1920s by Eric Sherbrooke Walker, the hotel overlooks a breathtaking river gorge in the Aberdare Range. Spread across 69 acres, which Walker purchased in 1928, the hotel is not just a place of luxury but also a site of historical significance.
One of its most notable features is the Paxtu cottage, which served as the commissioned residence of Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the global scouting movement, in the late 1930s. This cottage now houses a scouting museum, attracting visitors from around the world. The hotel was also home to the famed hunter and naturalist, James Corbett, adding to its rich tapestry of stories.
Olive Gardens Hotel: A Modern Oasis in Nairobi
Olive Gardens Hotel, a 3-star gem located just 3.8 kilometers from the Kenyatta International Conference Centre in Nairobi, is another significant acquisition by the Gachagua family. The hotel offers 60 well-appointed rooms, each equipped with modern amenities such as flat-screen TVs, private bathrooms, and free Wi-Fi, catering to both business and leisure travelers.
The hotel’s serene garden, ample private parking, and a restaurant specializing in African cuisine make it a popular choice for those seeking comfort and convenience in the heart of the city. The hotel’s strict policies, including no pets and specific check-in times, ensure a seamless experience for all guests.
Treetops Hotel: A Royal Legacy
Treetops Hotel, located within the lush Aberdare National Park, holds a special place in history. First opened on November 6, 1932, by Eric Sherbrooke Walker, Treetops gained global fame in 1952 when Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the British throne during her stay at the hotel. The young princess learned of her father King George VI’s death and her subsequent ascension while dining at Treetops with Prince Philip.
Despite being burned down by Mau Mau fighters in 1954, the hotel was rebuilt, growing into a 35-room establishment while maintaining its iconic treehouse design. Over the years, it has hosted numerous notable figures, including musician Paul McCartney, author Willard Price, and Lord Baden-Powell.
Vipingo Beach Resort: Coastal Luxury Redefined
Located 20 kilometers from Watamu National Marine Park, Vipingo Beach Resort represents the pinnacle of coastal luxury on the Kenyan coast in Kilifi. The resort, now under the Gachagua family’s ownership, offers an unparalleled experience with stunning ocean views, a pristine beachfront, and a range of top-tier amenities.
Guests at Vipingo Beach Resort can relax in the extraordinary infinity pool, enjoy the vibrant bar area, and savor exquisite meals at the resort’s restaurant. Each room is meticulously designed to provide a tranquil escape, with air conditioning, private balconies, and lush garden views.
The resort’s proximity to natural wonders like the Arabuko Sokoke National Park and the Bio-Ken Snake Farm makes it an ideal destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.
