President Uhuru Kenyatta said he decided to seek peace over his promise to Ruto. The decision to shake hands with ODM leader Raila Odinga came when the need to maintain a peaceful country arose.
Speaking at the Sagana state lodge on Wednesday, February 23, the head of state said the decision made him break his promise to deputy president William Ruto. He further added that he informed his deputy about the whole process and that Ruto was well aware the president was going to shake hands with the opposition leader.
Uhuru also said he had apologized to Raila for the abusive names he had referred to him earlier during campaigns.
“Yes I called him (Raila) ‘kimundu’ but I asked for forgiveness…. William Ruto was aware of our handshake and I told him explicitly that I will shake hands with Raila. I know I had a promise to Ruto, but I got to a point where the main thing was peace. That is what I sought” , said Uhuru.
