#lowerfoodprices: Kenyans calls out on government to lower food prices


Kenyans have take to social media to protest on the increased prices of basic food commodities with many pointing fingers to the government for assuming such conversations.

In a popular hashtag dubbed #lowerfoodprices started on Twitter from Sunday evening, February 20, Kenyans complained about the increased food prices which have resulted to the high cost of living.

Most of the users, complained that prices of cooking oil, maize flour, sugar, cooking gas among other commodities have risen by a significant margin making it hard for Kenyans living below the poverty line to put food on the table.

Also, recent data released by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) showed that food prices rose by 8.89 per cent in January this year.

“This was mainly due to an increase in prices of commodities under; food and non-alcoholic beverages (8.89 per cent); transport (6.84 per cent); and housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (5.11 per cent) between January 2021 and January 2022,” said KNBS in a statement.
