Alchemist: Nairobi club accused of racism shuts down to allow for investigations

The alchemist bar in Nairobi has shut down to allow investigations into racism claims.

The club was accused of racism after a viral video circulating on social media showed a black man being turned away after trying to join a queue meant for white customers at the entrance.

The video further showed that the entrance had two queues; one for blacks and the other for white people.

The video shared on Twitter by one Murgor created a heated debated.

“Last week, when I went to Alchemist, there was a line for white and Indian people separate from the blacks. One black guy tried using the line akachujwa (and was removed) immediately,”

However, in a statement, the bar dismissed the claims, noting that they had reached out to the man reportedly being turned away from the queue.

“The man in the white t-shirt had no issues walking in. We spoke with him on the phone. He confirms he had no issues and didn’t even know that camera footage had been shot of him and released

“Our management has never had a policy of discrimination towards the people that have walked through our doors,” they argued.

The county government chipped in for further investigations on the racisms claims. Alchemist announced that they have closed to allow for investigation.

The bar also noted that the officials will be checking to determine whether there has ever been a policy of discrimination.

“Interviews and footage will be reviewed of the past events both at the gate and inside the establishment,” The Alchemist said in a statement.
