It was actually a go-kart built by his father for Fernando’s older sister, Lorena, that sparked Fernando’s passion. Lorena wasn’t interested, but three-year-old Fernando jumped at the chance to drive.
His father modified the pedals so he could reach them, and a racing legend was born.
Fernando’s mother, Ana Díaz, is a department store employee. While she may not have shared his initial love of karting, she along with his father supported his racing dreams throughout his childhood.
This support, including allowing him to pursue racing over traditional schooling, was instrumental in allowing Fernando to develop his talent and reach Formula One.
Early career
Alonso’s racing journey began at an incredibly young age.
By the time he was three, he was already behind the wheel of a go-kart – originally intended for his sister! His talent was undeniable.
